Sheet Music Rental Licensing
Copyright is wonderful and also strange. It was created to work best for professional organizations, but it is still less than optimal for educational institutions, particularly at the K-12 levels. Students should be writing, highlighting, cutting up and pasting together their music to help learn quickly and efficiently. Because of these aspects, unless otherwise indicated all “purchases” of my music are rentals which allow for use for one year from the purchase date. Please see below for examples, and if you have questions, please connect with me.
Original Compositions and Public Domain Arrangements - Terms
Renting a piece of sheet music allows for unlimited digital and printed copy usage for personal practice, rehearsal, household performance, or K-12 performance for one performer for the duration of one year from the purchase date. This term applies for all uses but is particularly put in place so that student musicians may print, mark-up, cut-up, re-print, use digitally, or otherwise do as needed to study and practice the piece for maximum learning while knowing that they may make additional prints, as needed. After one year has passed, a new rental will need to be made for additional use.
Example 1: If purchasing a piece for cello and piano, please purchase 2 copies of the piece.
Example 2: If purchasing a piece for use by a string quartet (4 performers), please purchase 4 copies of the piece.
Example 3: If purchasing a piece for use by an orchestra of 40, please purchase 40 copies of the piece.
Arrangements of Copyrighted Works by Others - Terms
During this rental period, arranged sheet music with an original copyrighted source allows for digital and printed copy usage following typical United States copyright rules for the duration of one year from the purchase date. After one year has passed, a new rental will need to be made for additional use. The store description of each piece will delineate the number of musicians each purchase covers.
